Peptidoglycan Biosynthesis

The biosynthesis of peptidoglycan can be divided into two distinct stages. The first stage involves the assembly of the disaccharide-peptide monomer unit Lipid II, via a series of UDP-precursors and lipid intermediates. The second stage then comprises of the polymerisation of the monomer units on the outside surface of the cytoplasmic membrane and the subsequent binding of this newly made material to the existing cell wall (van Heijenoort, 2001).
